As you follow along with this blog, you’ll frequently hear me say that if you’re doing anything online for your business, you need to be building your list. Always be building your list of email subscribers. You may wonder why this is so important, the most important thing you’ll do in online marketing.

Email is Frequent and Frequently Personal

Most people online check their email regularly, often several times per day. Since they’re looking for personal messages from friends and family mixed in among commercial and spam messages, people make an effort to see every single email, even if they only skim the subject line.

This differs from Twitter or Facebook, where few people will be sure to read every single tweet or status update. If something is really important, they’ll probably have multiple chances to hear about it as the discussion takes place, or will learn about it when meeting up in person.

They Haven’t Unsubscribed

Your subscribers all made a conscious choice, not only to subscribe in the first place, but took additional action to confirm using double opt-in. If they haven’t unsubscribed, there is some ongoing interest in what you have to say.

Putting These Together Gives You Incredible Value

Combine this interest with the fact that they’ll at least skim every single email, and you have a guaranteed audience who are open to your offers.

This is what makes an email list so valuable. From the moment you launch the first basic website for your business, you need to be building your list.

<itunes:summary>It's often said among internet marketers that you need to be building your mailing list, but what exactly makes an email list so valuable, more than any other marketing format?</itunes:summary>
